How To Ask For Signs From Your Spirit Guides
Hello dear friends!
One of the major themes that comes up in my 1-on-1 Reiki healing sessions is how to communicate with our spirit guides. I almost always see at least a few guides during these sessions, and much of the time, I feel a longing for connection. And this longing goes both ways- people want to feel closer to their guides (or “team of light” as I call them) and the guides themselves want to communicate with us too!
Since we earthly human beings are in a different phase of energy than the spirit realm, we have to get creative on how we communicate with each other. And this can be overwhelming at times, I know. Most days, we may feel disconnected and alone, or unsure of the signs we think we’re getting. So, if you’re wondering how to ask for signs from the Universe, or spirit team, this post is for you.
I remember many years ago, when I started on my spiritual journey, I would receive signs regularly, but wouldn’t know how to interpret them. I would overthink them, and get confused and frustrated, ultimately feeling like I wasn’t “good at this” at all. If this sounds like you, then this first tip is where I’d recommend you start. And honestly, it forms the cornerstone of my relationship with my own spirit team!
My #1 way to ask for signs is…
The Reassurance Sign
This is my favorite way to communicate with my peeps, mostly because it is very straightforward. The “reassurance sign” is one specific symbol that you ask for whenever you simply want to feel supported or loved. A sign that you’re not alone, that all is well. I often recommend choosing an animal, number sequence (e.g. 444), or another simple symbol (e.g. a fleur de lis, maple leaf, etc) to use here. Then just be open to receiving it, in ways you may not expect!
Hummingbirds have long been a “spirit messenger” for me, ever since they’d come and sit on my fingers by the bird feeders at my childhood summer camp. So, this is the sign I ask for, or sometimes don’t even ask for at all- and it shows up for me almost daily! I’ve seen my hummingbird as a bumper sticker, a logo on a piece of medical equipment, on a card in the mail, on a necklace, a person’s tattoo, while scrolling Instagram...you get the idea.
Make your reassurance sign something that means something to you, and one that you’ll be able to recognize when it comes along. Then, when it does, don’t overthink it. Remember, this is just a way for your spirit team to say “Hey, we’re here. We love you. We got your back.”
Another way to work with signs from the universe is what I call…
The Clarity Sign
This may be the more common thing that people think of when they hear about asking for signs. We tend to ask for signs when we’re feeling confused or want clarity on a decision. A clarity sign has a very specific message, within a specific time frame. And while I almost always ask for a clarity sign before making a decision, it’s not the only thing I do! I have a few other practices that I use, along with it, which you can check out in Module 6 of my Energy Mastery online course.
It’s important that your clarity sign be different than your reassurance sign, and also that you ask to receive it within a specific time frame! This sign can also be animal or number sequence, or even a song or anything else. But make sure that you communicate with your guides what the sign will mean ahead of time.
For example, I want clarity on whether I should move to a new city, or take this new job offer, or perhaps end a relationship. I ask to be shown a yellow heart within 48 hours, and if I do, it’s a “yes.” If I don’t receive that sign, then it’s a “no.”
Clarity signs take some practice, but I’ve found that being specific (exactly what you’re looking for, and within a time frame) helps tremendously with the interpretation.
There are so many ways that the Universe and our spirit guides are trying to communicate with us- far too many to fit in this post. But I’ll throw in a few more of the fun ways that I’ve received signs over the years:
The Loved One Love Note
It’s normal to want to reconnect with a loved one who has crossed over, and they’re probably open to connecting with you too! This applies to both pets and people. You can make a specific version of your reassurance sign that is something that reminds you of that person, or of a time you shared together. For example, you can ask to be shown their picture or name, like I did with my childhood cat. Or a symbol of their hobbies or interests, like an anchor for a grandpa who served in the navy, or a pair of ballet shoes for a sister who was a dancer.
The Song Lyric Message
Spirit guides love to work with electricity, specifically light and sound. And music is a wonderful language that they use to speak with us. Sometimes, when I’ve asked for a sign, the next song that pops up on my Spotify will have something profound to say. There was even a time that the album cover had a hummingbird on it- double sign!!
The Blatantly Obvious Sign
These don’t come often, but boy, it’s fun when they do! I think of these as blatantly obvious signs, because they’re usually a one-time thing that happens so quickly and clearly, that you just can’t miss it. One time I was driving and thinking about this potential new client, and whether I should accept their proposal. I thought out loud to myself “should I work with this person?” and then immediately I pass a bright orange billboard with the words “yes you should” on it. I don’t remember what the billboard was advertising, but I know I got my message loud and clear that day!
These are just some of the ways that you can open the lines of communication with your spirit guides. Your team of light is always trying to connect with you! (we humans just suck at listening sometimes)
If you’re new to working with signs, I’d recommend sticking with the reassurance sign for a while. And whether you’re just dipping your toes in, or you feel like you have a strong relationship with your guidance team, any of these techniques will be wonderful.
The more we practice, and relax into a place of trust and surrender, we can see that we are never alone. And we can feel supported and guided every single day.
