How Reiki Can Rewire The Brain
Hello dear friends!
Having practiced Reiki for 7 years now, and just over 2 years into my brain retraining journey, I naturally look for ways that these two modalities can work together. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how many people within the retraining community are familiar with Reiki and either practice it themselves or want to receive it! Seems like more and more of us are finding how energy healing is a perfect complement to all kinds of neuroplasticity programs. (psst, if you’re curious about which programs I use and recommend, check out this post here)
Lately, in my virtual Reiki practice, I have had the pleasure of working with more clients who are using self-directed neuroplasticity to recover from chronic pain/illness, and have been so happy to support them in this way. If you are interested in neuroplasticity or already doing some kind of rewiring practice, Reiki can be an amazing addition to your self-care. And even if you’re not doing any formal retraining at the moment, in this blog you’ll learn how energy work can actually change the brain and nervous system!
The truth is, everything around us rewires the brain. That’s just how brains work- always scouting for information to learn what is important to our survival! However, we can intentionally change the brain to spend more time in states of calm, joy, and abundance. And Reiki can make a huge difference in that practice.
Here are 5 ways that Reiki rewires the brain!
1. It creates a calm space for the nervous system
Healing can only happen when the nervous system is calm. Being in the parasympathetic state turns on your body's innate healing mechanisms, and is essential for supporting digestion, immunity, sleep, hormones, and more. Within the safe container of a Reiki session, many clients find themselves resting into deep states of calm. The more times you can teach your brain it’s safe to relax, the more this will become your natural state of being. I personally find that Reiki allows a more profound and longer-lasting calm than other practices like meditation, breathwork, etc, so I recommend regular sessions for those wanting to train their nervous systems to chill out.
2. It connects you to spiritual support
I’ll be honest, trying to heal from illness and/or trauma can be lonely, frustrating, and discouraging at times. Many clients report feeling isolated or spiritually cut off due to these kinds of hardships. During Reiki sessions, I often feel the presence of angels, ancestors, and other spirit guides who have come to support the client. This is sometimes the most powerful part of the session, and can give you a boost of encouragement. Most people end a Reiki session feeling loved, protected, and with a deeper connection to their spiritual support team. This can be a pivotal step in training the brain to relax into a place of trust and optimism.
3. It charges up your intentions and visualizations
A big part of brain retraining, and self-mastery in general, is setting intentions/proclamations and practicing visualizations of desired outcomes. I think of this as tuning into a certain energy or vibration, and the more that you can do this, the more your brain will connect to that possibility. Each intention has a specific vibration to it, which we can amplify during a Reiki session. Also, visualizing yourself happy, healthy, and fulfilled is just about connecting to a potential self in the quantum field, and that’s a big part of what I do with clients. Reiki energy can be used to give more power and clarity to these goals.
4. It anchors you in your own power
When I’m in a session with a client, I’m not the one doing the healing. I am simply the conduit and facilitator. Reiki energy is part of the life force all around us, and I am here to connect you to it. My goal is for you to step into your role as co-creator of your reality, and remember your ability to heal yourself and build the life you want. Many people know what it’s like to feel disempowered around health, money, relationships, etc. and Reiki can be a part of taking back that power. This is one way we can give the brain and nervous system more inner resources.
Side note: if you ever work with a healer that makes you feel fearful, small, or dependent, walk away!
5. It can remove blocks that keep you stuck
A major part of a Reiki healing session is releasing energy blocks, cords, or areas of stagnation. Many of these are related to old patterns, traumas, or even to other people. It can be hard to move forward and heal, when you’re still holding onto these things energetically. If you struggle with feeling stuck in a pattern that doesn’t serve you anymore, or attached to a past relationship, or anything like this, Reiki can be really beneficial. Often, after a Reiki clearing, clients report feeling lighter and freer, and more able to redirect their unhelpful thoughts or behaviors. Both Energy Alchemy sessions and Cord-Cutting sessions can support this!
6. It is trauma-informed and retraining-friendly
In my opinion, Reiki sessions are meant to be supportive and non-triggering. Reiki is an inherently calming, balancing, and regulating energy. So, I try to make my sessions sensitive to those with trauma history and those actively doing brain retraining. Sometimes, we explore topics that require relaxing into, such as inner child work, but overall I try to avoid talking too much about pain/symptoms/trauma stories. We want to avoid re-traumatizing the brain or activating the limbic system, and instead focus on creating calm, lightness, and hope.
The best part of doing Reiki is that each client and each session is unique! I love working with fellow brain retrainers and those looking to make significant shifts in their health and wellbeing. Receiving Reiki, especially on a regular basis, can help you rewire your brain for vitality, abundance, and calm.
